PTA’s Reflections Art Program brings art to life across the nation

Purpose : The aim of this study was to investigate the Twitter experiences of adults with severe communication disabilities who use augmentative and alternative communication AAC to inform Twitter training and further research on the use of Twitter in populations with communication disabilities. Method : This mixed methods research included five adults with severe communication disabilities who use AAC. It combined a quantitative analysis of Twitter networks and b manual coding of tweets with c narrative interviews with participants on their Twitter experiences and results. Results : The five participants who used AAC and Twitter were diverse in their patterns and experiences of using Twitter. Twitter networks reflected interaction with a close-knit network of people rather than with the broader publics on Twitter. Conversational, Broadcast and Pass Along tweets featured most prominently, with limited use of News or Social Presence tweets. Tweets appeared mostly within each participant’s micro- or meso-structural layers of Twitter. Obtaining help in Twitter, and engaging in hashtag communities facilitated higher frequency of tweets and establishment of Twitter networks. Results reflected an inter-connection of participant Twitter networks that might form part of a larger as yet unexplored emergent community of people who use AAC in Twitter. Twitter can be used as an important vehicle for conversation and a forum for people with communication disabilities to exchange information and participate socially in online communities.

That’s the new normal for singletons navigating social distancing amid the new coronavirus COVID outbreak. Putting in-person dates on hold for now is a drastic, but necessary adjustment to help protect other people from contracting the virus — particularly those who are immunocompromised or elderly. There’s a lot of uncertainty at present, and none of us know how long social distancing will remain in place, so it’s easy to feel a little panicked about spending a lot more time alone — something that perhaps can see an increase in feelings of loneliness.

But being single needn’t be a reason for despair right now.

A few weeks into the pandemic, a meme circulated among some of the mothers I follow on various social-media platforms. My friends were getting honest about how hard it is to raise children right now. I also read it as an indirect plea to not take my child-free privileges for granted. And then the pandemic happened. Add to that list middle-class parenting, long an aspirational experience, whose social protections are now showing themselves to be a bit of a charade.

These types of conversations have garnered renewed interest in recent weeks, and not just among my friends. The gap between parents and the child-free has also been evident on Twitter. That particular exchange has all the supercharged, often annoying characteristics of internet debate, but it highlights a long-standing tension.

With increasing numbers of people isolated because of quarantine and social distancing, COVID is not the only public health threat we should be worried about—loneliness is one as well. While scientists are rushing to understand how the coronavirus works, researchers have long understood the toll that social isolation and loneliness take on the body. People who do not feel connected to others are more likely to catch a cold, experience depression, develop heart disease, have lower cognitive function and live a shorter life.

In fact, the long-term harm caused by loneliness is similar to smoking or obesity. In January, a national survey found that 79 percent of Gen Zers, 71 percent of millennials and 50 percent of baby boomers feel lonely.

Happiness and the Patterns of Life: A Study of Geolocated Tweets

Last week, comedian Randy Rainbow, found himself in some more than hot water when old tweets resurfaced where Rainbow made offensive comments about Black, Asian, Hispanic, trans people, among others. The tweets date back to with some as recent as Rainbow himself, or someone running his Twitter account, has been deleting these at a rapid pace over the past couple of days but a spreadsheet was created to collect them all.

In one night, Matt Taylor finished Tinder. He ran a script on his computer that automatically swiped right on every profile that fell within his preferences. Nine of those people matched with him, and one of those matches, Cherie, agreed to go on a date. Fortunately Cherie found this story endearing and now they are both happily married. If there is a more efficient use of a dating app, I do not know it.

Taylor clearly did not want to leave anything to chance. Why trust the algorithm to present the right profiles when you can swipe right on everyone? No one will be able to repeat this feat, though, as the app is more secure than it was several years ago and the algorithm has been updated to penalise those who swipe right on everyone. Or so people believe. For those who might struggle with “packet sniffing” — the means by which Matt gamed Tinder — the tantalising promise that maybe, by putting our faith in an algorithm, an app or website might be able to find the right person is thoroughly appealing.

Like most things that we wish we had, I think it deserves particular scepticism when someone claims they can do it. Lots of apps and websites claim to be able to use data to sort through profiles for better matches.
